Freedom

Today we are celebrating the freedom of our country.

I am frequently overcome with gratitude for my daily life but today feels like I am celebrating the birthday of a great great grandpa, that I never met.

We get together and celebrate all because I was born into this inheritance. I get to gorge myself on the fat bank account, he spent his life acquiring.

I can hear of all my great great grandpa’s struggles and fights, his character and devout effort to live a life and create a space. A space where he, his children and all others who joined this battle, could have a better world.

Even though, I struggle with some of the manner, in which the previous steps were taken, they have provided a country that has allowed me to spend my entire life, only experiencing the inheritance.

An inheritance that required no effort, time or sacrifice on my part.

I have heard the stories and appreciate all his hard work but the freedoms he was fighting for and won…. Well, I have never experienced the bondage that his efforts freed me from.

I have had only the privilege to live with such freedom. My time and energy is not spent on obtaining freedom but is spent in seeking all the options of freedom, within myself, within my space, and my world.

I have the freedom to love whom I choose.

I have the freedom to stay on this bed and write, over going to grandma’s for a swim.

I have the freedom to speak my feelings, thoughts and frustrations.

I have the freedom to engage in an argument or not.

I have the freedom to my own opinion, religion, political views and way of living,

I have the freedom of how I spend my time, money and resources.

With all these freedoms, I feel that a part of my attitude towards this awe-inspiring responsibility, is tinged with the abundance and effortless obtation of my grand inheritance.

On this day of celebration, I hope that my sense of responsibility increases, as I gorge on my freedoms.

I have a responsibility to maintain the freedoms, my great, great grandpa acquired.

I have a responsibility to diligently seek out all the options of freedom and work hard at eliminating the ever increasing areas of bondage.

I have a responsibility to contribute to the bank account, rich with freedoms and to fight against all that oppresses.

I have a responsibility to make this world a better place, a better world that starts within me.

I have a responsibility to not squander my inheritance, for it is my children’s inheritance too.

I have a responsibility to follow in my great great grandpa’s footsteps and not shrink from struggles or fights.

I have a responsibility to be of character and devout in my efforts.

I have a responsibility to live a life, create a space, where myself and all who choose to join in on the battle, can have a better world.

The freedom of our country, is our inheritance, let us not take this responsibility lightly.
