Live A Great Story

Live a great story......
I was introduced to this string of pearls, by an incredible soul, and they have moved me ever since. I fell in love with the thought of my life being a story, narrated by life and yet written by me.

This Beautiful string of pearls, I wear everywhere, everyday.
It is not solely the grand moments that compose a great story, it is all the little details. The thoughts in my head, the dishes in the sink, my attitude, the dates with my love, the laundry, my tears and laughter over and with my children, the heartaches, and frustrations, the mundane, the taxing, the highs, the awakenings, the lessons, the growth, all the little words inbetween the lines, are being read back to me and written by me.

I find myself in constant editing mode, these are my words. These words, that I am continually reflecting on to see, if my heart and mind are aligned in agreement that I am living a great story.
Whether I am reflecting back, or in the present, or drafting the next chapter, I have to ensure I love the words I am writing. It takes courage, diligence, it takes life, awareness, honesty, openness, it takes writing and rewriting. And as my pages are becoming filled, I find myself in love with my story, and daily grateful that I get to write her.

Which leads me to storytelling. I just finished a chapter on storytelling, in a book called, The Power of Meaning by Emily Esfahani Smith. The author’s focus in this chapter is to prove the vital and undeniable accet, storytelling contributes to our meaning. The all time and age old question that burns in every human being, Why am I here? What is my meaning?

Some of the following tibbits from this chapter are little treasures that resonated and inspired me.

We are all storytellers, we are all engaged, in an “act of creation,” which is the “composition of our lives”. Each of us has worked by improvisation, discovering the shape of our creation along the way. Our identities and experiences, in other words, are constantly shifting. Like a jazz musician in the middle of an improvisation, we may follow one path, then abandon it for another. Storytelling is how we make sense of that act.

We need to make sense of the world. We are constantly taking pieces of information and adding a layer of meaning to them; we couldn’t function otherwise. Stories help us make sense of the world and our place in it, and understand why things happen the way they do. Storytelling is fundamental to the human search for meaning.

Stories are particularly essential when it comes to defining our identity.

When we want people to understand us, we share our story or parts of it with them; when we want to know who another person is, we ask them to share part of their story in turn.

The story we tell about our lives reveal how we understand ourselves and how we interpret the way our lives have unfolded. We are all the authors of our own stories and can choose to change the way we’re telling them.

The most moving stories are rooted in vulnerability, but they are not too emotionally raw. The stories come from scars and not wounds. They have settled in the storytellers mind so that she can reflect back on the experience and pull out the meaning.

Storytelling may seem like you are just talking all about you you you, but what it really is is reaching out into the void and connecting with people and letting them know they’re not alone.

Storytelling helps us all connect with ourselves and each other. It is a vital part of us living a great story, a gift of connection, a tool in discovering meaning in all that fills our space. It is our way to help us make sense of this book we are writing with our lives. We get the privilege of being inspired and inspiring others to live a great story by our storytelling. We get the privilege of walking alongside each other as we tell our stories from wounds to scars, as we heal and discover the meaning of living a great story, according to our own personal dictionaries.
